Today in the App Store and Android Play Store you'll find our latest update: Layar 6.2!
You may not notice any changes right away, but there is one significant addition. In this version of Layar, we're introducing what we're calling AR Video.
Essentially, now items around you that are normally augmented with Layar Vision content (magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, brochures and other print media) can now come alive with video right on top of them!
Imagine reading the newspaper on your way to work and watching as the box scores on the sports page turn into video highlights to catch you up on the game! With Layar 6.2 and AR Video, this is now possible.
Developers making Layar Vision content can now easily add videos to these experiences quickly and easily. Check out the video below to see a quick demo of the power of AR Video!
Layar recently released Layar Vision, an extension of the Layar platform enabling visual search on the mobile phone, recognizing real world objects and showing digital content on top of them.
We organized the Layar Creation Challenge as a way to kickstart the Layar Vision launch by encouraging developers to create immersive Augmented Reality experiences with the beta client.
More than 200 developers registered for the Challenge, and we reviewed many great submissions, but we narrowed the list down to these 15 concepts that we believe best meet the Challenge criteria.
After the recent release of several new Augmented Reality-capable devices, BlackBerry users can finally download Layar!
Layar now supports the following BlackBerry 7 OS devices: BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930, BlackBerry Torch 9850/9860 and BlackBerry Torch 9800/9810 and is available for download in the BlackBerry App World!
We're also launching a BlackBerry version of the Layar Player very soon, so any BlackBerry app can use Layar technology!
The BlackBerry Layar client is similar to the Android and iPhone 5.0 clients with a few exceptions, including that there is currently no Layar Vision beta for BlackBerry. For full details on these variations, please see our BlackBerry support announcement.
In a continued effort to help make all interested parties into expert Layar Vision developers, we're hosting another webinar this Thursday at 5pm Amsterdam time (CEST), this time to provide examples of the best and worst types of reference images.
Join Layar Vision expert Michael Hofmann to make sure you're choosing the most augmentable reference images possible for your Vision layers. Register now!
In case you weren't able to attend the Introduction to Layar Vision webinar that King Yiu Chu hosted last Friday, September 9, we posted the audio recording and presentation slides here for download.
Big news for all you Creation Challenge participants! After we opened the Challenge for submissions recently, we had such a strong response from developers needing more time to build their Vision concepts that we have decided to extend the submission deadline until September 29!
This means you now have two more weeks to turn your Vision concept into a reality! It also means that if you haven't entered the Challenge yet, you now have enough time to jump in and get crackin' on your idea!
You'll want to use this additional time wisely by taking in all the Layar Vision tips you can through our tutorials and sample code as well as the following new resources we've created to help you!
Don't forget about the Introduction to Layar Vision webinar this Friday; it will be especially helpful for developers who are considering entering the Challenge!
