in.fondo.al.mar (under the sea) is a journalistic project which uses web-based tools to construct a shared memory on the "toxic ships" scandal and to initiate a participatory investigation on the suspected sinking and dumping of tons of radioactive and chemical waste in the Mediterranean Sea. in.fondo.al.mar mobile - leverages on Layar to display on your mobile device the whole list of dumping and sinking cases.

For over 30 years, a network of scruple-less entrepreneurs, politicians and secret service agents supported by Italian mafia groups have dumped tons of chemical and radioactive waste in the Mediterranean sea by deliberately sinking rusting ships loaded with hazardous cargoes. Despite abundant evidence about the extent of this criminal traffic no comprehensive institutional inquiry has been conducted yet on this scandal. In face of the inertia of national and international institutions on this case, in.fondo.al.mar (Italian: Under the Sea) aims at initiating a grassroots and participatory map of the scandal that clarifies consequences for the public health and the environment.
