Zalando’s SDK-Powered Interactive Magazine is Back

Chris Cameron April 14, 2015

Last year we told you about how Zalando, Europe’s leading online-only shoe, fashion and accessory retailer, had integrated the Layar SDK into its iOS app to give users a unique AR experience for its magazine. Now, the latest issue of Zalando’s magazine is out with even more great Augmented Reality and Interactive Print experiences.

Several pages within the magazine have been made interactive, giving readers a unique print-to-digital shopping experience that connects items in the magazine with their digital counterparts on the Zalando website. A variety of Augmented Reality features wow readers as photography comes alive with behind-the-scenes videos, and 360-degree experiences give them new views of top products, and much more.

“This new feature is a great opportunity to offer our customers additional inspiration for gifts, festive outfits or even their own wish list,” said Arne Schepker, Vice President of Brand Marketing at Zalando (translated from the company’s German press release). “With videos, music and 3D views, we encourage interaction with our customers and make our brands and products even more vivid.”

iOS users in Germany, Austria and Switzerland can download the Zalando app and scan the pages of the latest issue to see the interactive content. To see it in action, have a look at the video below!

Vodafone’s “digitising europe” Summit Showcases Layar Technology

Chris Cameron December 16, 2014

Earlier this month, the Vodafone Institute hosted a one-day summit in Berlin called “digitising europe – Opportunities for the Next Generation,” which included interactive elements built with Layar’s Augmented Reality technology.

The goal of the event was to discuss and debate how the continued digitization of the business, work and education fields can spur growth in Europe, and featured a keynote by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The invite-only event featured 350 business leaders, politicians, innovators, entrepreneurs, academics and students.

Creative agency TRIAD, which was responsible for the organization and guest management of the event, made use of Layar to bring certain aspects of the event to life with AR. Attendees were surrounded with opportunities to experience AR from the very start as the event’s invitations featured scannable content.

Additionally, the event program, wall banners and table displays could be scanned with Layar to reveal extra content, including videos of speakers and social media links. TRIAD made a strong effort to inform attendees with multiple calls-to-action, including artwork on the invitation, program, attendee name tags, interactive displays and even a mention by the moderator during the event.

Volkswagen Promotes New Passat with Interactive Newspaper Campaign

Chris Cameron December 15, 2014

Volkswagen is the latest in a number of large automakers to add Augmented Reality and Interactive Print to its marketing strategy. Similar to Nissan Canada’s print takeover from 2012, Volkswagen has launched a sizable newspaper ad campaign in its home country of Germany with Interactive Print enhancements placed front-and-center.

A full twelve-page advertisement in Welt am Sonntag (Germany’s largest Sunday newspaper) shows off the new high-tech features of the 2015 Volkswagen Passat with videos that play right off the page when scanned with the Layar App. Additionally, readers can play with an interactive widget using Layar to view the new Passat with their own choice of color and rim style.

In total, the ads will be part of a circulation of over 400,000 newspapers. The pages have also been compiled into a brochure that will be distributed to every German Volkswagen dealership, as well as select business hotels including Radisson, Grand City Hotel, and Holiday Inn. Over 164,000 copies of the booklet are initially being shared.

The campaign was produced by Volkswagen’s German advertising agency Grabarz & Partner, with digital content production by Mackevision and zweiteHeimat. Limebizz, an Advanced Layar Partner, was employed to help with the AR and Interactive Print items.

So far the campaign has been a success, including some attention from the local press. To give it a try yourself, scan these examples with the Layar App.

Zalando Adds Layar SDK to iOS App for Special Holiday Issue

Chris Cameron November 26, 2014

Zalando, Europe’s leading online-only shoe, fashion and accessory retailer, has integrated Layar’s technology into its iOS app to provide an exclusive Augmented Reality experience with the holiday issue of Zalando magazine for users in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

15 pages within the magazine have been made interactive, giving readers a unique print-to-digital shopping experience that connects items in the magazine with their digital counterparts on the Zalando website. A variety of Augmented Reality features wow readers as photography comes alive with behind-the-scenes videos, and 360-degree experiences give them new views of top products, and much more.

Using the Layar SDK, Zalando has incorporated Layar’s Augmented Reality and Interactive Print technology directly into its own existing app for iOS in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. By keeping users in the same app, the Layar SDK enables a more familiar interface for Zalando’s readers to experience the interactive AR elements of the magazine.

New German Magazine MEET Launches with Layar

Chris Cameron June 20, 2013

A brand new magazine from Hubert Burda Media, Germany’s largest magazine publisher, has launched complete with Layar’s interactive print from the start.

The magazine – MEET – is a lifestyle publication aimed at male “foodies,” and launched with a circulation of 70,000 earlier this month. Readers can use Layar to scan the pages of the magazine – filled not only with man-centric recipies, but also manly lifestyle suggestions – to gain access to bonus digital content, including shopping lists and videos.

The inclusion of interactive print in a newly launched title from the start is a strong indicator of the growth in popularity of Layar’s technology and interactive print as a whole. We’re very excited to see continued growth into the German market, especially with a brand new title such as this.

The magazine is published by Burda Community Network, part of Hubert Burda Media which is a leading German publisher and printer. It’s a huge sign of approval for interactive print to have such a large publisher unveil an entirely new brand with Layar’s technology.

You can find MEET and Eat Like a Man on newsstands in Germany now!
