Add Fun Interactivity with Clickable Image Carousels

Chris Cameron May 6, 2013

Not long ago we added a new dynamic widget to the Layar Creator: the Clickable Carousel. Basically, it works just like the existing Image Carousel widget, but offers the ability to add links to each image so users can tap them to visit various links.

There are several cases in which this widget is very useful and fun for the user, including the example in the video tutorial above which we created. We added various dresses and hats to a model that you can swipe through to mix and match styles, and clicking on the images takes you to the mobile shopping pages for those items. You can try it by scanning the image below.

Other great examples have emerged from the community already! One user added the various body systems (muscles, organs, nerves, etc.) as slides on top of a skeleton image. Click here to view this example and scan with Layar!

This gift guide shows users different colors and styles for a bag by letting users slide through and click the one they like! Scan them with Layar to see how Clickable Carousels can add interactivity to your print content.

To make your own Clickable Carousel, just follow these steps:

  1. Drag the widget onto your page
  2. Click “+” to upload the first image
  3. Add the URL it should link to
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until all images are added, then click “Apply Changes”
  5. Resize and reposition the widget
  6. Test and publish!

Check out the video above or scan the image below to see how it works, and log in to the Layar Creator today to get started making your own!

Print Power’s Magic Cover Comes Alive with Interactive Print

Chris Cameron April 18, 2013

The Dutch magazine Print Power has created a truly magical cover for its latest issue with Layar’s interactive print. Scanning the cover with Layar brings the static cover to life with a truly awesome video of a magician doing several great close-up card tricks in less than 60 seconds. It’s really something to see!

When we talk about adding the “Wow” factor to your print, this is what we mean! This is a very effective implementation of Layar’s interactive print technology. The call-to-action in the upper right instructs the reader to watch as the magician on the cover comes alive.

Click here to try it for yourself!

This is right up there among the best covers we’ve seen in interactive print, along with the robots on this Reader’s Digest cover and our own LAYARED Magazine with co-founder Raimo. There are lots of other great examples out there, but Print Power has really set the standard for augmented magazine covers!

VIDEO: The Power of Print

Chris Cameron January 14, 2013

A video posted by Newspaperswork, a Belgian print marketing platform, is a humorous and interesting take on the power of print to engage its readers.

In it, they provided three ad execs from leading companies with personal chauffeurs for the day so they could focus on reading the paper during their commute. Unbeknownst to the execs, Newspaperswork planned for some interesting, funny and ridiculous things to happen along the way - things that would normally catch your attention.

Bears driving cars, a man on fire, golfers in the medians … the inanity was on full blast just beyond the window of the car. However, in each case, the ad exec had their eyes buried in their newspaper and never noticed any of the antics going on around them.

A funny spin on the engagement of print, but it comes with truth as well. This is just another example of why print is far from dead, because readers are highly engaged with print products while reading.

With Layar’s interactive print technology, print engagement can reach even higher rates. One YouTube commenter sarcastically notes, “I wonder why they didn’t post this video in a newspaper but on the internet.” Well, with Layar, they could have done just that.

Activate Print Toronto Panel Discussion

Chris Cameron October 30, 2012

Last week we hosted our second (the first being in Amsterdam this summer) Activate Print event in Toronto, Canada. Dozens of creative and publishing professionals - from ad agencies, newspapers, magazines, book publishers, printing companies, etc. - came together to hear all about Layar, the Creator and some very positive results from successful campaigns.

As we shared with you last week, the reactions from attendees were outstanding! We wanted to take this opportunity to give you a look inside the event, to hear some of the panelists speak about Layar and their campaigns.

The video above features clips from our panel discussion with: Maggie Greyson (Integrated Program Manager at PostMedia), Neal Bouwmeester (Senior Marketing Manager at Nissan), Rimi Singh (Brand Director at TBWA), Karena Phidd (Group Director of Strategy at OMD), Sean Dixon (Associate Director of Strategy at OMD) and moderator Nigel Newton (Layar Partner).

In the video, the panelists, all part of an innovative and extensive Nissan campaign, discuss using Layar nationwide in PostMedia’s Canadian newspapers to promote sales and test-drives of a new Nissan model. They all have some great things to say about Layar.

“At a bare minimum, to have them be able to look at the ad, then just engage with it - even for 30 more seconds, even for 20 more seconds - that’s golden,” said Bouwmeester. “You can’t buy that. Well, you can buy it now.”

The campaign was a big success - so big, in fact, that Nissan is submitting the campaign for an advertisement innovation award. Next month, after the campaign awards, we’ll have more we can share on this project, so keep an eye out for that. Nissan also announced that they intend to use Layar in a new upcoming campaign, but they were very “hush hush” about that as well.

Thanks again to the Dutch Embassy and the Netherlands Ambassador to Canada, Wim Geerts, for supporting and opening the event by talking about the rich history of Dutch technology innovation.

“We’re one of the world’s largest exporters of IT products and services, ranking fourth, behind the US, UK and Germany. Quite a feat, when you consider that these other three countries have significantly larger economies and populations,” said Geerts. “If you’ve ever listened to music, enjoyed wireless internet or used a wireless headset with your mobile phone, the chances are that you have been using technology that was developed by the Dutch.”

Using Custom Colors in Layar Creator

Chris Cameron September 20, 2012

We recently released an update to the Layar Creator that makes it even easier to customize your Interactive Print. Now, the normal blue buttons can be whatever color you want them to be, allowing you to coordinate the color pallet of both your print materials and the interactive buttons you place on top of them.

You can use any of our pre-selected default colors, pick from the color wheel or enter in a hex color code to really choose the perfect color.

To see how you can use you own custom colors in the Layar Creator, check out this really quick tutorial video.
